PRACTICAL INDOOR POSITIONING TECHNOLOGY

FACT: It is estimated that in North America, about 93% of shoppers and travellers carry a GPS equipped smartphone.

VARIOUS INDOOR POSITIONING TECHNOLOGIES are being attempted by a number of large organisations in an attempt to provide methods which are able to determine the position of a device (smartphone) in an indoor environment. Large indoor structures such as malls, hospitals, airports etc. are potential users.

RECIPEFLYER is the only vendor or organization to demonstrate a PRACTICAL INDOOR POSITIONING SYSTEM.

Outside, under ideal conditions, surveyor grade differential GPS receivers can attain sub meter accuracy. They do not work inside.

Generally, smartphones can achieve GPS accuracy of approximately 3 meters (about 10 feet), under ideal contitions outdoors*** using hybrid location technologies.

Indoors, smartphone GPS is unavailable under most conditions.

Our solution does not use the smartphone's GPS to aquire its position.

Instead it scans and decodes a vinyl floor decal QR code, using our GPS LOCATOR or GPS SHOPPING smartphone Apps, which immediately updates the smartphone's exact GPS position (latitude and longitude) and applies magnetic deviation data to the compass.

Using the smartphone's internal sensors and the GPS location of the target, it displays a PICTURE COMPASS***.

An arrow is displayed on the smartphone, giving the user the direction to rotate their smartphone. When the smartphone is pointing in the correct direction, an actual photograph (taken at that point and in that direction) appears, acting as a visual signpost.

This is particularly useful where signage is not in the language understood by the user.

Each time a user scans in a different QR code, it updates the exact location and smartphone display, and corrects compass readings.

*** NOTES ON PICTURE COMPASS. Internal sensors, including the compass, in a smartphone are subject to variable MAGNETIC DEVIATION in certain locations in indoor environments. These deviations are measured and recorded and applied to the user's smartphone, thereby correcting their readings (when scanning the QR Code)

QR encoded 2.75 inch square vinyl WAYSTATION floor decals are placed at strategically around the location at specific GPS (latitued and longitude) locations about 6 meters apart (20 feet) .
The code at left will reset the smartphone to LATITUDE 38.854967,LONGITUDE -77.034917, (WAYSTATION 1)

When scanned into our GPS application, they will set the smartphone's reported position to that exact location and reset the application's compass to the present target, giving precise direction and distance readings.

An essential part of PRACTICAL indoor location technology, is the actual physical GPS MAPPING of a location.

Using our exclusive technology and equipment, we are able to accurately GPS MAP inside locations, assigning the targets accurate (sub centemeter) latitude and longitude coordinates.

A user's smartphone's scanned in location can then be used to provide accurate directional and distance information for the target.



RETAIL STORE SHOPPING APPLICATION
These targets are marked, on the floor, with small (1 inch diameter) vinyl decals (beacons) 1 meter (approx. 3 feet) apart where products are located.

These beacons, which are strategically placed 1 meter apart, provide a visual guide to the exact GPS location.

In a retail store application, products are mapped to the GPS positions of these beacons, and include other information for the user, such as which side of the aisle (based on the orientation of the smartphone) and position on the shelf (high, middle and low).

Once at a store, the user can access our GPS SHOPPING application which will download (in a few seconds) a complete searchable database of the stores merchandise, containing product description,price, and any available nutritional information,picture and video, and GPS co-ordinates to the smartphone.

The shopper will be led to within 1 meter (just over 3 feet) of the product.

This all adds up to THE PERFECT STORE



LARGE INDOOR ENVIRONMENTS

In large indoor structures (airports, hospitals, malls etc.) 2.75 inch vinyl floor decals (or any vertical surface) containing QR codes which are encoded with the latitude and longitude co-ordinates of their exact location are placed strategically throughout the facility, about 6 metres (20 feet) apart.

When scanned into our GPS application, they will update the smartphone's exact location and display directional and descriptive information from the facility's information stored in our database.

The smartphone, when oriented in the general direction of the target, will display an image (still photograph) taken from that exact location in that general direction.

When oriented away from the direction of the target, a left or right arrow will be displayed telling the user in which direction to turn.

Using an AIRPORT as an example, if the user is in the basement (ARRIVALS), and their target is one floor above (DEPARTURES), they would be directed to the closest elevator or escalator and advised of the floor to get off.

Once off the elevator, they would scan in a QR code near the elevator or escalator which would then update the smartphone's exact location, and update the compass and distance information for the target on the smartphone.

If the target is in ANOTHER TERMINAL, the target would be updated to the closest SHUTTLE (or between terminal transportation).

Once at the other terminal, the user scans in the closest QR code, which would then update the smartphone's exact location, and update the compass and distance information for the target on the smartphone.

These TARGETS are assigned identifiers and GPS mapped by us.

Typical TARGETS would be:

  • AIRLINE check-in counters
  • DEPARTURE GATES
  • WASHROOMS, FIRST AID, CUSTOMS, IMMIGRATION, LAW ENFORCEMENT, SECURITY etc.
  • ELEVATORS, ESCALATORS, MOVING WALKWAYS etc.
  • ALL EXITS (FOR PARKING, SHUTTLE BUSES, TAXI STANDS, OTHER TRANSPORTATION etc.)
  • ALL RESTAURANTS, BARS, RETAIL OUTLETS AND SERVICES.

People travelling through airports speak and read many different languages, so providing directional and informational signage in more than a few languages is impractical.

Our GPS application is able to translate and deliver information in over 70 languages, therefore making the facility easy to navigate to almost every user that has a smartphone.

If the target has a valid telphone number, this is displayed.

Clicking on it will cue up the smartphone's phone application allowing the user to call that number.
